Ever since the COVID-19 Corona virus pandemic we have been forced to re-evaluate how we are living as a community. We have been advised on the necessary precautions that we need to take; wash your hands with warm water and soap, use hand sanitizer, wear masks and gloves, cough into your elbow, don’t touch your face and remain in isolation.

I haven’t had a virus for a long time and I feel it is because I am following a Paleo lifestyle, where I am nourishing my body with the right foods and therefore giving my immune system the building blocks to remain robust and in prime condition. The circumstances we are facing at the moment got me thinking that, yes I can follow advice and adhere to the above-mentioned precautions but what can I do to continue to build a strong immunity?

What I can do is nourish my body with immunity boosting foods and so can you. There is an abundance of information on the Internet to find out what foods can enhance your immune system. I wanted to focus on the foods and products that I already incorporate into my healthy lifestyle.

Vitamin C

There is no doubt that vitamin C can help to boost your immune system and helps to repair your body. I incorporate vitamin C in my diet mostly through vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, sweet potato and tomatoes. I do not consume much fruit, however I do consume berries from time to time and vitamin C is found in strawberries, which I include in my breakfast, dessert or as a snack. If you love fruit then you can also get your daily hit of vitamin C from oranges, kiwifruit, guava, cantaloupe and blackcurrants.

Bone Broth

A practice that I have been doing the last 3 years is that I consume bone broth on a daily basis. You can sip it like a hot drink or add it to your favourite recipes. Bone broth enhances gut health and is considered an immunity boosting food. Vitamins such as vitamins A, K2, and trace minerals; zinc, iron, boron, potassium, calcium and magnesium are found in bone broth. Bone broth also contains omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids and collagen. It restores and repairs our gut, increases the growth of good bacteria to keep our immune system strong, decreases inflammation and protects our bones and joints.

Garlic is an immunity boosting food that I incorporate in my cooking almost on a daily basis. It contains Allicin that promotes immunity defence in our white blood cells and is antiviral and anti fungal. It reduces oxidative stress in the body and is a prebiotic for the gut thus improving the microbes in the gut to keep the immune system strong.

Ginger is another immunity boosting food that contains vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A, C, E, B-complex, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, zinc and potassium. It reduces inflammation, improves digestion, is antimicrobial and is a natural antibiotic. You can add it to your recipes or add a couple of slices in some boiling water to sip on.

Apple Cider Vinegar

I love to use apple cider vinegar with ‘the mother’ in my recipes. I use it in many of my salad dressings and occasionally mix a teaspoon in 250mls of water and drink it. ACV is rich in beneficial probiotics, enzymes and antioxidants. It can heal your gut, boost collagen in your body, protect your joints, kills bacteria and it helps to support a healthy immune system.

I thought about how I can help others, during this crazy and challenging time to enhance a healthy and robust immune system, so I decided to put all of my favourite immunity boosting foods that I use, in a convenient pack that can be ordered online and delivered to your door.
